GRID Autosport is a racing video game developed by Codemasters as a follow-up to their popular racing game GRID 2.

It was released in 24 June, 2014 in North America and 27 June, 2014 in Europe for Microsoft Windows, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. It was also released for the Mac OS X and Linux platform on 10 December, 2015 by Feral Interactive, who would also bring the game to iOS on 27 November, 2017, to Nintendo Switch on 19 September, 2019, and to Android on 26 November, 2019.[1]

Announced on April 22 2014, GRID Autosport aims to move the series back in line as a more authentic racing game much more focussed motorsport game, also featuring an authentic handling model shaped by Community feedback. First person view makes a return since its last appearance in Race Driver: GRID in the form of two in-car cameras - dashboard view and cockpit view.[2]

Gameplay[]

Handling[]

Codemasters eliminated the "TrueFeel" handling of GRID 2 and developed a new improved handling model created following feedback from the community, and which they’ve tested with Autosport magazine journalists, members of the team and racing drivers.

Discussions about the handling started on January 23 2014 during a meeting on the studio's HQ. The developers wanted to change the way grip falls away as players approach the slip angle and as wheelspin occurs.[3]

Disciplines[]

Vehicles and events are grouped into five disciplines, each representing a unique form of racing with distinct handling characteristics.

  • Touring Car Racing
  • Endurance Racing
  • Open-Wheel Racing
  • Tuner Competitions
  • Street Racing

Career[]

In the Career mode of GRID Autosport players has the goal of building their own professional career as a racing driver competing for various teams. They can choose to specialise in their favourite disciplines and raise their profile in each, or conquer them all and gain access to the prestigious GRID Championships.

The career is divided in seasons, and to start each, players has to accept team offers, which are awarded based on the overall performance within a discipline.

Online[]

In Online mode, players can race against friends or other GRID Autosport players from all around the world.

Custom Cup[]

Choosing from any modes, tracks and vehicles, players can set a single event or mini-championship to their own specifications.

Split-Screen[]

Split-Screen is a single race mode which allows two players to race together in the same Custom Cup.

Damage[]

Players experience realistic handling effects as a result of vehicle damage, and in particularly bad crashes damage may be terminal. Damage can be switched from full to visual only in difficulty options. Collision based damage can be broken down into three main areas:

  • Wheels - Damage cause the steering to become misaligned.
  • Engine - Damaged radiator causes overheat, damaged turbo cause power loss, damaged exhaust will see a small amount of power loss, and a damaged engine will have a big reduction in performance.
  • Suspension - Damage makes the car less precise and visually with a lot more roll.

A new feature introduced in GRID Autosport is the "wear and tear" system, in which as players race over time, various parts will gradually lose performance through general use.[4]

Another key new feature added is the Team Radio system; at any point during a race players can request information from their engineer at the touch of a button to have easy access to standings and car health updates as and when players want it.

Replays[]

Players can view a cinematic replay of their race once it has ended. The game also features fully-integrated support for YouTube that enables to capture replay moments and share them online.

Flashbacks[]

A rewind feature can be used to revert back to a chosen moment if things go wrong during a race. The availability of flashbacks is determined by the chosen difficulty or is customisable in custom events.

Multiplayer also features Quick Flashbacks, allowing to reset the car at speed on the track.
